THE TREASURY OF SNOW AND HAIL

This article will discuss the mystery of the treasury of snow and hail, as well as the molecular configuration of water and ice, all of which reveal God the Creator’s invisible attributes, glory, handiwork, and well-thought-out intelligent design in nature.

JOB 38:22 (NKJV):
Have you entered the treasury of snow, or have you seen the treasury of hail?

Before the advent of microscopes, man could not truly appreciate the majestic splendor of the treasury of snow and hail.

Snowflakes and ice crystals are formed when snow or hail falls to the Earth. Snowflakes are characterized by having a crystalline-structured six-fold radial symmetry with each snowflake having six arms. No two snowflakes are the same as each one is formed differently with various environmental factors shaping the formation of each snowflake crystal.

Wilson Bentley is accredited as being among the first known photographers to capture images of snowflakes. Bentley discovered a way to catch snowflakes on black velvet and capture their image before they melted. Using a camera attached to a compound microscope, Bentley photographed his first snowflake on January 15, 1885 [1].

JOB 38:28-30 (NKJV):
Has the rain a father? Or who has begotten the drops of dew? From whose womb comes the ice? And the frost of heaven, who gives it birth? The waters harden like stone, and the surface of the deep is frozen.

Ice is 9% less dense than liquid water, because the orientation of hydrogen bonds cause molecules to push farther apart, which lowers the density of water when frozen. God designed water with a molecular structure such that when configured into solid ice it is less dense than when it is in its liquid state. This allows water to harden like stone (ice) upon the surface of the deep (waters).

Lakes and rivers freeze from the top down and the frozen ice remains afloat at the surface of the water. This allows fish and other sea creatures to survive even when the surface of a lake or river has frozen over. If ice were to sink to the bottom of lakes and rivers, the water in them would be forced to the surface and be exposed to the colder atmospheric temperature, which would cause the lakes and rivers to freeze solid and all sea life within them to die.

PSALM 19:1: (NKJV):
The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament [INCLUDING WATER IN THE SKY] shows His handiwork.

ROMANS 1:20 (NKJV):
For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made.

God’s attributes can be clearly seen in hail, snow, water, and ice. The treasure-like structures of ice crystals and snowflakes, and the molecular configuration of water that causes ice to float above the waters reveal the handiwork of Almighty God.
