WHAT WAS NAILED TO THE CROSS?

It is widely believed by many mainstream Christians that Yeshua (Jesus) nailed the law to the cross, so that the law itself has been abolished. This article will analyze the Colossians 2:14 verse which states that Yeshua (Jesus) nailed the handwriting of ordinances (requirements) that were against us to the cross, and declare that these ordinances (requirements) were not the law itself, but the ordinances (requirements) against us for breaking the law.

COLOSSIANS 2:13-14:
And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses, having wiped out the HANDWRITING OF REQUIREMENTS that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.

The law itself was not ‘against us,’ but the ordinances (requirements) that were contained within the law, for violating the law, is that which was against us.

EPHESIANS 2:14-16:
For He Himself is our peace, who has made both one, and has broken down the middle wall of separation, having abolished in His flesh the enmity, that is, the law of commandments contained in ordinances, so as to create in Himself one new man from the two, thus making peace, and that He might reconcile them both to God in one body through the cross, thereby putting to death the enmity.

Messiah (Christ) died for us, to pay the ordinance penalty required of us for breaking God’s laws. Yeshua (Jesus) wiped out the charges that were against us for violating His laws. He took them upon Himself and nailed them to the cross. It is the record of our sins, which are against us, that was nailed to the cross, not the law, which many Christians believe.

The ordinance requirements that stood against us are partially listed in Leviticus 20, but all are descendants of original sin, which required death.

GENESIS 2:17:
And YHWH (the Lord) commanded the man, saying, “Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”

ROMANS 3:23:
For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

ROMANS 5:12:
Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned.

The ordinance requirement for original sin was death, all men have sinned, all have fallen short of the glory of God, and all are appointed to die once.

JOHN 1:29:
John saw Yeshua (Jesus) coming toward him, and said, “Behold! The Lamb of God who TAKES AWAY THE SIN OF THE WORLD!”

HEBREWS 9:26-28:
He has appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself. And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment, so Messiah (Christ) was offered once to BEAR THE SINS of many.

1 JOHN 3:4-5:
Whoever commits sin also commits lawlessness, and sin is lawlessness. And you know that He was manifested TO TAKE AWAY OUR SINS.

Yeshua (Jesus) bore our sins and took away the sin of the world, not the law of the world, by nailing it to the cross.

ACTS 10:43:
All the prophets witness that, through His name, whoever believes in Him will receive remission of sins.

remission:
The cancellation of a debt, charge, or penalty [1].

Yeshua (Jesus) cancelled our charges, debts, and penalties that we owed, as required by the ordinances of the law, by nailing them to the cross.
