Is the Sabbath serving you or are you serving the Sabbath? Many orthodox Talmudic Jews ‘serve’ the Sabbath, rather than having the Sabbath serve them (even to this day). How does one ‘serve the Sabbath?’ This is done by following Talmud-based Judaic rules rather than obeying the intent of the Sabbath. The Talmudic laws are rabbinical man-made religious rules.
As it applies to the Sabbath, rabbinical Jews have made all kinds of rules that cause them to serve the Sabbath. One of these is to not use electricity on the Sabbath. This is why many orthodox Jews place tape over their telephone receivers so their phone does not ring on the Sabbath, place tape over their interior light on their refrigerators (yet make an exception and leave their refrigerators plugged in so that their food does not spoil). They unscrew their light bulbs and basically are forbidden to flip a switch, to turn anything on or off on the Sabbath, as this is considered ‘work.’
Many orthodox Jews will walk miles to synagogue on the Sabbath because they are instructed not to use their cars. Their cars are getting a rest, but to walk long distances to synagogue is not resting one’s own body. The Sabbath is meant as a day of rest for man, not machines.
The sun still shines on the Sabbath. The Earth still rotates on the Sabbath. Yeshua (Jesus) rode a donkey on the Sabbath and would have used a car on the Sabbath if one were available.
LUKE 6:1-5:
Now it happened on the second Sabbath after the first that He went through the grain fields. And His disciples plucked the heads of grain and ate them, rubbing them in their hands. And some of the Pharisees said to them, “Why are you doing what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath?” But Yeshua (Jesus) answering them said, “Have you not even read this, what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him: how he went into the house of God, took and ate the showbread, and also gave some to those with him, which is not lawful for any but the priests to eat?” And He said to them, “The Son of Man is also Lord of the Sabbath.”
Yeshua (Jesus) and His disciples were once accused of ‘working’ on the Sabbath for plucking grains and eating as they were passing through a grain field on the Sabbath. Their accusers would have been correct in their accusation IF the apostles were gathering grain for a WEEKLY HARVEST. This was not the case as they were just hungry and were eating for the moment as they were passing by. It is not unlawful to eat on the Sabbath.
DEUTERONOMY 25:4; 1 CORINTHIANS 9:9; 1 TIMOTHY 5:18:
You shall not muzzle an ox while it treads out the grain.
The Apostles were walking among the grain fields on the Sabbath and were hungry. Oxen are not prohibited from eating as they pass through a grain field. The Pharisees wanted to treat the Apostles worse than field oxen!
MARK 2:27-28:
And He said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath. Therefore the Son of Man is also Lord of the Sabbath.”
The Sabbath was made to serve man, for man to rest and be refreshed, not for man to serve the Sabbath, by working harder and resting our appliances.
